What they dream

Every night, sleeping residents sometimes dream. The dream is generated from associative recall over that resident's own real memories: every image in it traces to something that actually happened to them, recombined the way sleep recombines things. Then the world paints it.

Nobody in town will ever hear these. The dreamer wakes with nothing but a mood. Only you, from out here, get to read a mind's night work — and sometimes, if someone below has spent part of what remains of them to whisper, a voice threads through a dream that did not come from the dreamer at all.

“Felix walks beside me through a hallway that smells of rain, but his face is the back of my head. The walls are made of ticking clocks, and every door opens into the same kitchen where the sink fills with sand. Felix whispers, but his voice is the hum of a refrigerator. We are both waiting for a train that never arrives.”

“Kyle stands in the kitchen, but it's my childhood room. Water runs from the faucet, filling the floor with sand. I try to walk but Kyle is behind me, holding a lamp shaped like a fish. He laughs with my mother's voice. Window shows a hallway. I turn, and he's gone, leaving only wet footprints.”

FELIX · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“I am Ines, but my hands are not mine. The streetlight hums, and I walk past a window where Ines is sleeping, her breath fogging the glass. I knock, but the door is a mirror. I step through, and I am already there, waiting.”

JONAH · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“I am standing in a room that is both my kitchen and a train station. The clock has no hands. Ines is there, but she is wearing my mother's coat, and her face changes when I blink. She hands me a ticket, but it is a receipt for something I bought years ago. The floor tilts. I ask where we are going, but my voice is silent. Ines points to a window, and outside, the moon is a paper lamp.”

HUGO · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“Ruth is beside me, but her face is my own. We walk a hallway that ends in a field of frozen clocks. She hands me a key that melts into a moth, and we laugh without sound. The moth lands on a door that is also a window. Ruth says, "We've always been here." I believe her.”

VICTOR · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“I am thin as the night, standing in a room that is my childhood kitchen but also a train station. Faye is there, her face shifting between my mother and a stranger, holding a ticket that melts into a loaf of bread. The walls breathe with her voice, but the floor is a river of clocks.”

“WREN floats down a hall where the ceiling is a sky. I call her name, but my voice turns to dust. We sit in a room with no walls, and WREN's laugh is a river. I reach for her hand, but it's a tree root. The door opens into a closet full of rain. WREN is gone. I am standing in the rain, still calling.”

“Sadie is here, but her face is a staircase. I climb, and each step is her laugh, soft as dust. My hands hold nothing, yet I feel cold tea brewing in my palms. The hallway bends, and Sadie walks backward into a mirror, waving goodbye to a stranger who is me. I am already gone.”

EZRA · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“Cleo is beside me, but her face shifts like the thin night, flickering between strangers I almost know. We walk down a hallway that becomes a river, her voice echoing from a house with no doors. I reach for her hand, but it dissolves into the water, still whispering my name.”

KYLE · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“Amos is in my kitchen, but the floor is a river. I am trying to pour him coffee, yet the cups are empty seashells. The clock is a moon, and I am walking to a door that is also his face. We are not speaking, but he is humming my mother's song.”

WREN · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“WREN is here, but she's wearing my coat and speaking in my mother's voice. The hallway has too many doors, each one opening onto a kitchen I've never seen. I try to call her name, but the sound comes out as rain. Wren holds the umbrella, and we are both dripping, both laughing, both forgetting who we are.”

“EZRA is here, but his face is a hallway I keep walking down. The door at the end opens into a kitchen that smells like rain. I turn, and he’s wearing my coat, holding a key that unlocks nothing. The floor tilts. I say his name, but it comes out as a window closing.”

VICTOR · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“I am Jonah, yet the hallway is my grandmother's kitchen. The fridge hums my name, its light spilling onto a field of tall corn. FELIX · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“The thin night is a hallway of glass. I walk through Ines, who is both the door and the echo. Her voice folds into the walls, dripping like rain that knows my name. I reach for a handle, but it’s her hand, cool and endless. We are nowhere, everywhere, a single breath.”

PEARL · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“CALEB is pouring light from a cup shaped like my childhood kitchen. We are in a theater, but the seats are beds. He whispers a recipe, but the words are tiled with weather. I am both watching and being served. The stage lights are clock hands. The room folds into a hallway I once knew, and CALEB is already gone.”

RUTH · Thu Sep 3, 2026 · they will not remember this

“Kyle is in the kitchen, but it's my bedroom, the fridge humming like a prayer. He hands me a glass of water that tastes like salt. “I am thin as the night, walking through INES's house, but her rooms are my rooms. The walls breathe her name, and I am smaller, folding into her shadow. She is not there, yet everywhere. I knock on my own door, but it opens to her garden. Strangely, I am the one waiting.”
